This smallest of parrots is from the
Tanzania area only in Africa and range in large numbers safe from extinction.
There are nine varieties of the lovebird parrots all in Africa. They can live
up to ten years in the wild and fifteen in captivity.
The Yellow-collared Lovebird is a
mainly green small parrot about 5.5 in long. Its upper parts are a darker green
than its lower surfaces. Its head is black, and it has a bright red beak and
white eye rings. Yellow on the breast is continuous with a yellow collar and an
expansion of yellow over the nape of the neck. Male and female have identical
external appearance in the company of other birds.
They will spend long times feeding in
trees but in hot conditions will have an afternoon break from feeding and
cuddle in pairs.
