The Chaco Chachalaca is a medium sized bird of South America that typically weighs between 480-600g. Both males and females have relatively dull plumage and patches of bare red skin around the eyes. Adult males have a larger, brighter red dewlap than the females do.
This is a species that tends to be very vocal in the wild. Breeding pairs can often be heard performing duets together either alone or as part of a larger group. The Chachalaca chorus can last for more than 2 hours and is usually heard early in the morning. It is from this tremendous noise that the species gets its name.
